Managed Forestry
Do you know how much forestland the U.S. has lost in the last century? The answer may surprise you, because the answer is “none.” Over the past five decades alone, the amount of standing timber has increased by 39 percent, with an increase of 10 million acres between 1987 and 2002.*
The reason is managed forests. When forested land is productive, as managed forests are, there is less pressure to develop that land for other, often less sustainable uses.
PCA makes managed forestry a priority in its sustainability program and is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI). To be eligible for SFI certification, two-thirds of a company's raw material must come from SFI-certified sources — but PCA does much better than that. Virtually all (over 95 percent!) of our raw material comes from SFI-certified sources.
As part of the SFI program, our forestry practices are regularly audited. Those practices include active management of water quality and wildlife habitats, and protection of biological diversity.
